Our Elementary students continue to learn in enriched, mixed-age groupings: 6 to 9 years of age (Grade 1 to Grade 3) and 9 to 12 years of age (Grade 4 to Grade 6).
Within a stimulating classroom environment students are encouraged to make responsible choices and to take ownership of the education process as they work with materials that emphasize reason, relationships, analysis and abstraction. As always, the focus is on the individual child.
The Elementary curriculum addresses the need to actively engage and stimulate these young, curious and social learners. A “follow the child” atmosphere prevails, as teachers guide learning by encouraging independence, creativity and resilience. Children research answers to questions using classroom materials, the library media center and community resources. While Montessori Toddler and Primary classrooms are characterized by a ‘quiet hum’ as children work individually or in pairs, Elementary classrooms alive with activity as students collaborate by working together.
