Junior High (Grade 7-8)
Our Junior High programme is designed to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of the emerging adolescent. During this critical period of development, we provide an environment where students can learn to lead, be courageous, and develop resilience – an approach we believe better prepares them for their high school years.
The Junior High curriculum emphasizes critical and analytical thinking, and provides students with the tools to succeed. Complex studies in Literature, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Media Studies, Dramatic Arts, French, Physical Education, Music, and Research challenge and prepare students for any secondary school setting.
At SMS, the expanded academic challenges and expectations, and our focus on leadership and community responsibility, result in an education that prepares students for the complex and ever-changing academic and social challenges ahead. Our Grade 8 students are well-prepared for high school and upon graduation, move on to a variety of secondary school settings including International Baccalaureate (IB), private and public schools.
Building on the Montessori philosophy to provide students with real-world experiences, our IGNITE (Inspiring Growth and Nurturing Innovation Talent and Entrepreneurship) Programme combines hands-on learning with leadership and business venture.
Through participation in micro-economy activities, such as running the daily milk programme and Friday hot lunches, as well as various other business ventures of their own initiative, Grade 7 & 8 students are exposed to financial literacy, business management, and entrepreneurship. Creating and processing order forms, creating spreadsheets, generating shopping lists, and acquiring materials, along with numerous other experiences with business operations, work to develop the various skills required in real life.
In addition, Grade 7 & 8 students are offered leadership opportunities and form committees to assist with school leadership and mentoring. Students participate in numerous experiences and activities beyond the classroom including leadership retreats, field trips, Model UN Conferences, outdoor education and community service work. This includes an annual fall Odyssey Outdoor Education Trip to engage students in teamwork, leadership activities, environmental learning, and personal challenge.
Giving Curious Minds a Place to Learn and Grow
The learning environment in our Junior High reflects the growing and changing needs of the young adolescent including social interaction, self-expression, and self-knowledge. At SMS, our students have a voice in the learning process. The teacher as a guide concept encourages autonomy, self-direction, confidence and time management – important skills for any student to master in today’s increasingly social and collaborative world.
Our students are offered leadership opportunities and form committees to assist with school leadership and mentoring. Students participate in numerous experiences and activities beyond the classroom including leadership retreats, field trips, Model UN Conferences, outdoor education, small business management, and community service work. This includes an annual fall Odyssey Trip, which involves outdoor education components that may include long hikes in Algonquin Park, canoeing or a trip to Tobermory.
