Giving Curious Minds a Place to Learn and Grow
The learning environment in our Junior High reflects the growing and changing needs of the young adolescent including social interaction, self-expression, and self-knowledge. At SMS, our students have a voice in the learning process. The teacher as a guide concept encourages autonomy, self-direction, confidence and time management – important skills for any student to master in today’s increasingly social and collaborative world.
Our students are offered leadership opportunities and form committees to assist with school leadership and mentoring. Students participate in numerous experiences and activities beyond the classroom including leadership retreats, field trips, Model UN Conferences, outdoor education, small business management, and community service work. This includes an annual fall Odyssey Trip, which involves outdoor education components that may include long hikes in Algonquin Park, canoeing or a trip to Tobermory. The purpose of the Odyssey trip is to engage the students in teamwork, leadership activities, outdoor learning, and personal challenge.
